While only 136,026 divorces were granted in 2008, the lowest for 30 years, the leading publishing expert says more cases than ever are being fought out in court as couples battle over the size of maintenance, lump sum payments and splitting pension pots.

The grim findings are reinforced by free debt solutions company Payplan which says divorce debt inquiries to its national helpline have escalated over the past two years.

“The divorce rate may be down but this only paints half the picture,” explained John Fairhurst, managing director at Payplan, the free debt solutions specialists. “More couples are taking their disputes to court but without realising the full financial consequences of doing so.”

The average cost of divorce today is £13,000 – a lot of money involved in court appearances, solicitors’ fees, not to mention the emotional cost. And the spending doesn’t necessarily stop there, warns Payplan.

Before considering a divorce settlement, the national provider suggests couples weigh up the cost of court implications and the longer term costs of separation.

“Many couples don’t think beyond the court case but the inevitable change in living style will bring it’s own associated costs,” added Mr Fairhurst.

Payplan says its top five potential debt risk factors which all couples should consider are:

* Income drop – living alone doesn’t mean food and utility bills naturally fall by 50%; there’s a deposit for a house or first month’s rental deposit to find, possibly new furniture, and the list goes on.

* Treating the children – minimising the stress for children in a break-up very often means over compensating with expensive treats including holidays, toys, days out.

* Boost esteem – spending on luxuries can boost self-esteem after going through a demoralising divorce process but it’s not good for the bank balance.

* Change of lifestyle – life as a singleton can mean more socialising and going out with friends which is great for getting over things but costly.

* Sole name – while together you might both pay off outstanding debts; once divorced, if the debt is in your sole name, it’s you who will have to foot the entire bill.

“Divorce is costly and is a last resort but for some couples it is the only plausible step forward,” added Mr Fairhurst. “It is our job to ensure people in these situations, who find themselves in debt through divorce, are aware of all the implications. This way we can help them manage their debt and at the same time, live a comfortable life.”

One positive trend change is the fact that more couples appear to be recognising they have money issues much earlier and seem prepared to do something about it.

Mr Fairhurst agreed: “What is encouraging is that more and more people are realising the longer term implications of divorce and are contacting us way ahead of actual divorce day. By planning ahead, we can help them to manage their debt more effectively, giving them as much flexibility as possible.

“We’re not here to judge, we’re here to assist at a vulnerable time in a person’s life. Nobody wants to be in debt and it’s our job to help guide people out of it.”

For some people it has been the wake-up call they needed, but for others it has simply made matters worse, according to Payplan, one of the UK’s major providers of free debt solutions.

The ‘Consumers’ Attitude Towards Debt’ report published by leading independent researcher Mintel in July found that 39% of people interviewed are now more careful when it comes to spending money, citing the recession as a welcome ‘wake-up’ call.

But in contrast, almost half of those describing themselves as ‘not very financially organised’ admit the recession hasn’t changed their spending habits, it’s simply hampered their ability to gain credit for future borrowing.

For those already teetering on the brink of debt this doesn’t bode well, say Payplan, fuelling concern that debt problems are likely to continue to rise as the recession unfolds further.

The national free debt solutions provider has seen a dramatic rise in requests from consumers for free debt management plans to help pay off debt. A 20% increase was recorded in 2009 and calls to Payplan’s helpline and online service in the first half of 2010 indicate this rate is continuing upwards.

Managing director John Fairhurst said: “Demand for debt help in the UK continues to escalate. And while the recession has led to a debt ‘detox’ for some, for others it has simply served to exacerbate the situation further.”

This week Payplan issued a warning to consumers experiencing financial difficulties to tread carefully when seeking help – or they could end up owing more money!

“Consumers may unknowingly be charged up to £100 a month in fees in some cases,” added Mr Fairhurst. “This not only increases the debt to be paid off, it means it’s likely to take even longer to clear.”

Free debt management plans are available if consumers do their research properly, say Payplan. And consumers shouldn’t be put off as they are simple to set up, easy to follow and are likely to represent a better alternative to borrowing more money.

“A debt management plan puts an individual back in control. It allows people to pay their debts at a rate they can afford while impartial representatives like ourselves remove the stress by dealing direct with the creditors. With only one payment to make and a realistic chance of getting interest and charges frozen and no fees taken out, debts can be repaid as quickly as possible,” added Mr Fairhurst.

The store will be located on the east side of the famous shopping location, meaning that Primark will effectively ‘book-end’ Oxford Street.

Paul Marchant, chief executive of the fashion retailer, said: “We are pleased to be part of this redevelopment plan and we hope that the new Primark store will act as a key catalyst for the regeneration of the Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford Street.”

The site on which the new shop will open was formally the location of a Virgin Megastores.

According to reports, the new shop may also rival the Church Street Liverpool branch for the title of largest Primark outlet, as it will be 85,000 sq ft compared to Liverpool’s 84,000 sq ft.

At present, Primark operate 198 stores across Europe.

‘Ten Mile Menu’ teams up celebrities with professional chefs and challenges them to produce a 3 course meal using ingredients sourced within a 10 mile radius.  Galton Blackiston, who owns Morston Hall in Norfolk and partnered Ricky in the programme is passionate about using local ingredients.  He commented, “This series is right up my street.  I was in Hitchin, a place I didn’t know and found wonderful watercress, long-horn beef, fantastic vegetables and wild garlic”.
